The Academy hosted a special Hillsborough memorial tournament last week as Liverpool FC played against youngsters from Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday.

Sides from U9 to U14 level took on their counterparts from the East Midlands and Yorkshire respectively, in tribute to those who lost their lives as a result of the disaster on April 15, 1989.

The tournament followed the recent visit to the Academy by Margaret Aspinall and Sue Roberts of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, who delivered a talk to the U15 to U23 age groups.

Academy director Alex Inglethorpe said: “This is a significant tournament to all three clubs to help to pay our respects to the 96.

“It is really important that the players have an understanding of what happened in 1989 and are educated on the Hillsborough disaster.”
