For Robbie Fowler, going to Anfield means so much more than just the football.

“It’s a way of life,” admits the namesake of one of Liverpool’s greatest ever goalscorers, who takes a 140-mile round trip to the stadium for each and every home match.

Robbie has been attending games for more than a decade and currently travels from Stafford to Merseyside to watch his team and, perhaps equally importantly, catch up with the fellow fans that have become friends through mutual passion for the Reds.

“The stresses and strains of work are all worth it when you see the lads go out for 90 minutes. It is very much a release,” he says.

“The people that I’ve met through going the game have become my closest friends. So I’ve got a lot to thank this football club for, and the values that it represents echo what I believe in my life.

“I don’t know why I do it… sometimes I think I’m pretty mad!

“But when you’re in that ground you can be yourself. You’re surrounded by like-minded people. It’s one of the best feelings in the world and I’m so lucky that I get to do it.”

Fowler the fan met Fowler the player at the age of six, when the latter took a break from tormenting defences in the Premier League to visit patients at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

And the former recently received another unexpected guest as Georginio Wijnaldum dropped by to show the club’s appreciation for his support with the gift of a brand new 2017-18 LFC home shirt.
