Liverpool FC Academy coach Steven Gerrard joined 10-year-old George Mathias for a run around the Kirkby complex last week to raise funds for one of the club’s official charity’s partners, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

George’s brother James was born prematurely in 2010, and as a result was left in a coma suffering serious complications. The dedicated staff at Alder Hey looked after James from day one and managed to save his life.

In order to thank the children’s hospital, George has been running a mile for every month that James has survived alongside a host of celebrities and sportspeople including ex-Reds legends Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

Gerrard said: “It’s fantastic to see what George is doing to raise awareness and funds for Alder Hey to thank them for the incredible work they did with James. The work that they do on a daily basis is truly phenomenal and I am privileged to be a founding partner of the hospital.”

George’s father Richard Mathias commented: "It is so kind of Steven to take the time to run with George to support his fund raising efforts. George's charity is going really well, with over £18,000 raised so far, and high profile support such as this really helps to promote what George is trying to achieve.”
