With Liverpool supporters steadily arriving in Basel for the Europa League final on Wednesday night, here is a handy guide for travelling Reds to make the most of their visit to Switzerland.

Get a picture with the Europa League trophy

There will be a UEFA fan zone in Münsterplatz - one of Basel's most famous squares - where supporters can get in the mood for the final.

Fans will be able to have their picture taken with the Europa League trophy, take part in football activities and enjoy entertainment provided by the tournament's partners.

The fan zone is open from 11am to 7pm local time on the day of the game.

St. Jakob-Park

Liverpool have been allocated the western end of the stadium, in blocks B3 to B7, C1, C2 and G1 to G4.

Turnstiles open at 5.45pm local time and fans are advised to arrive early to get through security checks.

The total capacity of the stadium is 38,512.

The city itself

Basel sits in the north west of Switzerland, sharing borders with Germany and France.

The locals speak a variant of German, although many people will understand French too, due to its proximity.

In February 2016, it was estimated that Basel has a population of 175,566, with the city stretching over 9.2 square miles.

Food

There are more than 1,000 places for Reds to choose from, with the local cuisine mixing the best of French, German and Italian cooking.

The two main squares in the city - Marktplatz and Barfüsserplatz - have a number of suitable cafes, restaurants and bars around them.

Fan meeting point

On the day of the game, Liverpool have been allocated Barfüsserplatz for supporters to congregate ahead of kick-off.

Fans can gather in the main square of the old town before using a nearby tram stop to travel to the stadium.

What to see in Basel

The majority of Basel's best sights are in the old town and can easily be reached on foot.

The cathedral - the Basel Minster - is located just off the main square, Marktplatz, and you can pay a small fee to climb the tower to see some stunning views overlooking the city.

Marktplatz also holds a market six days a week, where you can taste the local cuisine with fresh food on offer.

Guided tours of the town hall - the Rathaus - are available, with that also being located at Marktplatz.

And if you fancy it, Basel Zoo can be found close to the city centre at Binningerstrasse 40.

It is the second-largest zoo in Switzerland and features monkeys, elephants, an aquarium and much more.

Around the ground

In terms of eating and drinking, there is little around St. Jakob-Park, although there is a shopping centre near the stadium, with a number of shops, cafes and restaurants there.

Currency

Switzerland uses the Swiss franc as its currency - it is commonly abbreviated as CHF.

Weather

On Wednesday, it is expected to be cloudy with temperatures around 18 degrees at kick-off.

British Embassy

Should you need it, the British Embassy in Switzerland is located in Bern - almost 100 kilometres away.

The embassy is open from 8.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 5pm local time from Monday to Friday.
