Joe Gomez will be firmly in contention to be part of England’s World Cup squad if he can continue his impressive form for club and country, Jamie Carragher believes.

Defender Gomez’s fine start to the campaign for Liverpool was rewarded with a first call-up to the senior Three Lions group for their recent friendlies with Germany and Brazil.

The 20-year-old made quite the impression in his first appearances on the full international stage, too, looking comfortable in his 65 minutes against Germany before putting in a man-of-the-match display in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Brazil.

Carragher, for one, liked what he saw and the Reds legend has challenged Gomez to earn himself a place in Gareth Southgate’s party for Russia next year by maintaining his level of performance for Liverpool.

“I thought he did really well. I think he’s had a great season,” the former centre-back told Liverpoolfc.com.

“He’s come in at right-back and at first he was chopping and changing with Trent [Alexander-Arnold], but now it looks like he’s got the shirt at this moment and long may that continue for him because it looks like Gareth Southgate, from an England point of view, is going to give young players a chance.

“A performance like that puts him in a great position, I think, going forward with the World Cup in the summer.

“He’s given himself a great shout for the World Cup but he’ll have no chance of that unless he performs for Liverpool in the way he has been doing.

“If he continues like that he’ll have a decent chance and most importantly he’ll have a great chance of impressing Jürgen Klopp.”
