Jürgen Klopp believes Liverpool are entering an ‘exciting and decisive’ period of the season in good shape after four successive victories.

The Reds have recorded consecutive wins over Huddersfield Town, Maribor, West Ham United and Southampton heading into Tuesday’s Champions League tie with Sevilla in Spain, scoring 13 goals and conceding just one in the process.

Tomorrow’s fixture is the second of 13 in just 45 days approaching the festive period – and Klopp is pleased with the shape his side is in coming into what he feels could prove a defining segment of the campaign.

“It was very important for us. These four results – all four results – were unbelievably important,” the manager told Liverpoolfc.com during the flight to Spain on Monday.

“We’ve had 12 games this season, that’s not even a third of the season, so we have to learn from our experiences and build on our performances and results. That’s what we did in the last few weeks and now what we have to do in the next few weeks.

“It’s getting really exciting and decisive - and that’s really cool.”

Liverpool’s quartet of wins came on the back of what Klopp has previously described as his side’s poorest showing of the season so far – the 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

“It’s good and of course I am pleased with this. We needed this,” continued the boss.

“In the beginning of the season, we were in a really good shape after pre-season and then the first international break, if you watch the games back, there was a little break.

“Arsenal and Hoffenheim were before the break – good games, good football games. Even Watford for a first game of the season, absolutely OK; yes, they scored three – and that’s too much – but you see them now in the league and they’re doing well.

“After the international break it was kind of like, ‘we have to start again’ and you could see it.

“It was really important we reacted on not only the Tottenham game, but the few games before Tottenham as well because they were not as convincing as they were at the start.

“The Champions League games were good – really good – and we had a fantastic game against Maribor. It was all OK but we could do better.

“To improve in the table, you need to get points and to get points you need to play stable football and that’s what we were lacking.

“Now it looks much more stable and that was really important for us. We cannot rely on the fact we will always score, but we will always produce and create moments – we can rely on that because it will always happen, but for that we don’t have to chase a game. We can stay cool enough to do the right things, then we can decide it.”

Sevilla represent Liverpool’s next immediate challenge – and win at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium will see the Reds book a place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a game to spare.

A possibility that will not cloud the preparations of the side, though, insists Klopp.

“Everybody knows, so we don’t have to talk about it,” he stated. “That’s clear. It’s easy mathematics, but we don’t think anything special about it.

“This is the game of the Champions League so far [for us]. Since Hoffenheim, they’ve all been important, but Sevilla is a top team in Spain. They have quite a good home record and it’s a tough place to go.

“It will be very interesting and very challenging – I am really looking forward to it.

“Of course we know all of these things and we are flying there, taking all of the people there, to get a result.

“Before the game, we always want to win and then in the game we will have to see if we can realise that. It’s tough, but it’s really exciting.”

The previous meeting between the teams – back at Anfield in September – ended in a 2-2 draw.

Liverpool dominated the contest for long periods and also missed a penalty, but Joaquin Correa’s 72nd-minute strike secured a point for the Spaniards.

Klopp reflected: “That was a good game from us. It was kind of a typical game for this period of the season – we played really good, but they scored with each chance and we scored with 10 per cent of our chances!

“It was a good game but we all know if we hadn’t conceded the second, we’d be already through in the group.

“But you cannot have ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ – the only thing is we have to be ready again and we will be. That doesn’t mean we will win the game, but we can win the game and that’s enough for me.”

Given Liverpool’s fixture schedule, it’s possible Klopp may elect to make changes for the encounter in Spain and over the coming weeks.

He explained: “That’s what we will do, but it’s not that we will change things from game to game in four or five positions.

“We need all the boys in these specific moments. When you saw in the last game how we could make the substitutions, it was like, ‘wow!’ I felt like I was in… I don’t know… a specialised, expensive supermarket; only high-quality and whatever you pick, it’s perfect!

“That’s really, really, really cool and it’s what we need. In the end, there is always disappointment involved for the players if they don’t get picked, and that’s clear. But it’s part of the game.”
