Liverpool got their Premier League campaign back on track with a 'mature' display to defeat Huddersfield Town 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Emre Can and Roberto Firmino gave the Reds a cushion at the interval and their lead was turned into an unassailable one when Mohamed Salah swept in a 77th-minute penalty.

There were moments of individual brilliance, a landmark feat from a defender and an away record established in the match – and we have chosen five of our favourite things from the win…

Another fine finish added to the Firmino collection…

We’ve already been treated to a couple of ‘no-look’ finishes, the sublime Robbie Fowler emulation against Manchester City, and a delicate dink during the FA Cup tie with West Bromwich Albion from the No.9 this season.

And Firmino added another impudent effort to his tally – now at 19 in all competitions in 2017-18 – with a strike that caught both opponents and teammates unaware in first-half stoppage-time at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Having surged into the box from Sadio Mane’s tee-up, the Brazil international feigned to cross as he drifted towards the byline before, instead, somehow threading the ball off the inside of Jonas Lössl’s near post and in.

“Brilliant play from Roberto,” said Jürgen Klopp. “What a nice little piece of football.”

Joel Matip the pass machine…

On a night when Klopp’s men enjoyed 74.8 per cent of the possession and played 911 passes, you might be surprised by the identity of the man who had most of the ball.

But centre-back Matip actually made Liverpool history with his 161 attempted passes against Huddersfield, 95.7 per cent of which were registered as accurate.

His total was the highest that any Reds player has recorded in a Premier League match since Opta began gathering such statistics at the outset of the 2003-04 campaign.

Indeed, Matip claims third place on the overall list for the division – behind only Santiago Cazorla’s 162 against Sunderland in May 2015 and Yaya Toure’s 168 against Stoke City in December 2011.

Emre being everywhere…

Can’s opening goal, a well-struck drive that benefited from a deflection, was only one element of a dominant performance from the midfielder in Yorkshire.

He might have had a pair of assists to his name before he finally claimed one, with two excellent deliveries from the right channel headed too close to the goalkeeper and wide respectively by Mane.

It was the German felled by Philip Billing in the box for the second-half penalty, though, as his attack-minded approach paid rich dividends for the visitors.

A glance over his individual statistics also shows how much Can influenced the game: 102 touches, 87 passes, four shot assists and more than 90 per cent passing accuracy.

26 and counting for Salah…

The goals just keep coming for the Egypt international, this time a game-clinching penalty late in the second half which increased his tally for the season to 26.

Only Luis Suarez has bettered that amount in a single term for the club in the past 10 campaigns inclusive of this one, having scored 31 goals during 2013-14 and 30 the previous year.

In the Premier League era, meanwhile, the No.11 is chasing down Robbie Fowler’s record of 36 in all competitions throughout 1995-96.

Another away ground conquered…

The result against David Wagner’s side marked Liverpool’s first victory at the John Smith’s Stadium in a league fixture.

Tuesday night’s encounter brought up a 58th different ground the Reds have played at since the inception of the Premier League, and they have won at more of them – 54 – than any other team.

They were successful on their only previous visit to the venue for a competitive encounter, too: a 2-0 win in an FA Cup third-round tie in December 1999.
