Liverpool took a huge step toward the Champions League quarter-finals as they thrashed FC Porto 5-0 in the first leg of the sides' last-16 tie yesterday evening.

A hat-trick from Sadio Mane and goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah helped Jürgen Klopp's team rack up a handsome aggregate lead ahead of an Anfield return leg on March 6.

There was plenty to love about the Reds' performance at Estadio do Dragao - and here are five things that we particularly enjoyed...

Sadio joins an elite club

In scoring three times in Portugal, Mane became just the fourth Liverpool player to net a hat-trick in the Champions League proper.

Michael Owen, (Haka, 2001-02 and Spartak Moscow, 2002-03), Yossi Benayoun (Besiktas, 2007-08) and Philippe Coutinho (Spartak Moscow, earlier this season) are the only other players to have previously achieved the feat.

And the Senegalese is now one of just two men - alongside Owen - to have scored a European treble away from home in the club's illustrious history.

Top of the pile

The Reds' five-star performance in Porto saw them overtake Paris Saint-Germain as top scorers in this season's Champions League.

With Unai Emery's team only able to muster a single goal in a 3-1 defeat at Real Madrid last night, they were outstripped by a Liverpool side who twice racked up 7-0 victories in the group stages.

Klopp's men are currently averaging an eye-popping four goals a game.

Robbo runs them ragged

Having found himself behind Alberto Moreno in the pecking order earlier this season, Andy Robertson was forced to wait until yesterday's game to finally make his Champions League debut.

But the Scot more than made up for the delay, dominating the left flank defensively, regularly supporting attacks, and showing his deadly crossing ability on more than occasion.

The No.26 wasn't done there, either. After relentlessly chasing down Porto's attackers over 90 minutes, Robertson made one final dart to secure the match ball for hat-trick hero Mane at full-time.

He explained to Liverpoolfc.com: "I had to go running after the ball boy for his ball at the end - he was nearly upset! Luckily, I managed to get it."

Putting it on a plate

James Milner registered his sixth Champions League assist of the season as he teed up Firmino for Liverpool's fourth of last night's victory.

The Leeds-born midfielder is unrivalled when it comes to laying on goals for teammates in the competition this term, with Dele Alli and Kevin de Bruyne trailing in his wake.

What's more, Milner has chalked up that impressive statistic having started just three of the Reds' seven fixtures in the tournament proper - some going.

Mo making history

Salah joined just 12 other players on the list of those have netted 30 goals in a single season for Liverpool as he turned home a Milner rebound in brilliant fashion to make it 2-0.

The Egyptian's remarkable goal also saw him become the second-fastest to reach that tally for the club in its 125 years in existence.

Only George Allan (27 games) reached the milestone quicker than Salah (36), with Daniel Sturridge (37), Fred Pagnam (38) and Fernando Torres (42) his nearest rivals.
