Liverpool have only minor fitness concerns to consider ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash with Newcastle United at Anfield.

James Milner has to be checked before the meeting with one of his former clubs, having sustained a knock during the home win against West Ham United last weekend.

Georginio Wijnaldum and Ben Woodburn missed that game due to illness and remain doubts, though Danny Ings has recovered from a similar issue.

The captain, Jordan Henderson, is also primed to return to the starting XI.

“He trained completely normally – all good. It was a really good week for him so far, the best for three or four weeks now,” said Jürgen Klopp at his pre-match press conference.

Nathaniel Clyne played 90 minutes for the U23s on Sunday but requires more time to find rhythm before featuring for the first team, according to the manager.

Newcastle will be without former Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. “He has a knock to his knee and will not be available,” said Rafael Benitez at his media preview.

The Spaniard reported mixed news on the other injury problems for the Magpies, who sit 15th in the Premier League table after a four-game unbeaten run.

He said: “Islam Slimani will continue to work with the physios and fitness coach in the gym. Dwight Gayle is the other one but he is fine. [Matt] Ritchie is fine and the others are OK.”
