Liverpool enter transfer race for German ace
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is planning another raid of the Bundesliga as he targets Schalke’s Max Meyer this summer, according to reports in Germany.
The 21-year-old is considered one of the most promising youngsters in Germany and has been likened to Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli for their similar type of play.
Tottenham are thought to be monitoring Meyer’s progress and developing contract situation at Schalke.
Meyer is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract and Schalke could be forced to take a significant hit on the £45 million they quoted suitors last summer.
The Mirror claim Liverpool are confident they can get Meyer for a third of the original asking price as Schalke scramble to ensure their star asset does not walk away on a free.
Meyer has reportedly had a falling out with his manager, Markus Weinzierl, after the Schalke boss criticised his young star this season.
Despite his age, Meyer has already made 157 appearances for Schalke having coming through their youth ranks before becoming a regular in the side.
Meyer admitted that his future at Schalke is up in the air as he has refused to put pen to paper on a new deal.
Liverpool sent scouts to watch Meyer perform for the Germany U21s this week as the young guns took on Portugal and England.
Meyer played as a secondary striker in the 1-0 win over England and then continued his frontman duties in the defeat to Portugal.
Klopp’s spies were impressed with the youngster’s performances with Liverpool now plotting a £14 million bid for his services.
