Niamh Fahey felt Liverpool FC Women’s 0-0 draw with Everton was a case of ‘two points dropped’ as she reflected on a Merseyside derby that failed to really ignite.
It was a game of few chances at Goodison Park on Sunday, with both sides cancelling each other out in a scrappy encounter.
Hanna Bennison came closest to breaking the deadlock, the Everton midfielder rattling the crossbar in the second half, while Sophie Roman Haug and Ceri Holland both had opportunities to win the game for the Reds late on.
The draw moves Liverpool above Manchester United into fourth in the Barclays Women’s Super League table, but Fahey admitted Matt Beard’s side had arrived into the match wanting more.
“[It is] definitely two dropped,” the captain told reporters post-match. “We were coming here to take three points, so it’s two dropped.
“But we take a point, we didn’t concede and we push on through now to next week against Man City.”
Fahey continued: “I think it was a game of two halves. We had the better of the first half and Everton will feel that they probably had the better of the second in parts.
“I think we should have really capitalised on our dominance in the first half, but we didn’t and then it became a scrap. It was a bit of a weird game, up and down a lot, so maybe a draw is a fair result.
“There were just too many stop-starts really. There was no flow, the injuries disrupted it, it was a game which never got going.”
Despite the stalemate, Fahey delivered a strong performance at the heart of the Reds’ defence, the 36-year-old helping her side record a clean sheet on derby day.
“It was a good scrap, as a derby game always is,” she said. “I enjoyed it, it’s a great game to play in, obviously playing at Goodison as well is a nice occasion.”
She added: “[In the first half] we had great crosses come in but maybe we just weren’t getting in the right areas to get on the end of them.
“Sometimes it’s like this, and we’re going to have to make sure that when we are on top we take one of those chances and give ourselves a better foothold in the game.”
Asked if she believed that Liverpool could challenge the WSL’s top three during the remainder of the campaign, Fahey added: “For sure. There’s no reason we can’t. We’ve had a good season so far.
“We just need to keep building, keep progressing. We’re doing that all the time and there’s no reason why we can’t.”
